Watchmakers across Türkiye are preparing to mark World Watch Day on Oct. 10 with events and campaigns aimed at preserving traditional craftsmanship and passing watchmaking culture on to younger generations.

The day, launched from Türkiye and added to the international calendar of commemorations, will be celebrated this year under the motto "Watches Carrying Culture."

According to the All Watchmakers Businessmen Association, known as TUSAD, watchmakers in different Turkish cities will take part in activities highlighting the heritage, craftsmanship and professional value of traditional watchmaking.

Watchmakers seek to keep traditional craft alive

World Watch Day was first celebrated in 2025, and TUSAD President Ahmet Aydin said the association sees Oct. 10 as more than a promotional occasion.

Aydin said watchmakers in even the most remote parts of Türkiye would be encouraged to join this year's campaigns and events, while shops would be decorated with visuals prepared by TUSAD.

Initiative expands beyond Türkiye

TUSAD board member Mehmet Cagri Gundogdu said the initiative had grown from Türkiye into an international event bringing together the watchmaking industry in different countries.

He said the 2025 celebrations included participation from Switzerland, the United States, China, France, Italy, Portugal, Sweden, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, Germany and Finland.

Gundogdu also said the day had been recognized by the Switzerland-based World Watch Day Association, while this year's international celebrations will take place under the "Watches Carrying Culture" theme.

Why 10:10 carries symbolic meaning

The 10:10 position has long stood out in watch culture because the hour and minute hands create a symmetrical arrangement resembling a smiling face.

Frequently used in watch advertising and promotional images, the position is associated with visual balance and aesthetics, giving Oct. 10 symbolic significance as World Watch Day.

This year's events will therefore seek not only to promote the watch industry but also to draw attention to traditional watchmaking as a form of cultural heritage built around knowledge, craftsmanship and skills passed down through generations.
