Türkiye's four-member national team secured four silver medals at the 22nd International Geography Olympiad (iGeo), which brought together 184 young geographers from 50 countries in Istanbul.
Hosted in Istanbul by the Turkish Geography Society from Aug. 11 to 17, iGeo Istanbul 2026 wrapped up with an awards ceremony following a week-long program of written examinations, multimedia tests, and fieldwork.
Out of 94 total awards handed out—consisting of 16 gold, 31 silver, and 47 bronze medals—participants representing 38 countries and regions secured at least one medal.
Competing on home soil, Türkiye was represented by Ihsan Kubilay Akyel, Ege Cetin, Mehmet Efe Benderlioglu and Emir Kerem Kilic.
All four students picked up silver medals, giving the host country four medal-winning performances at the international competition.
Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Singapore, the United States and Indonesia each secured two gold medals, placing them among the strongest performers in the top medal category.
Germany, Belarus, Mongolia, Serbia, Latvia and New Zealand each added one gold medal to the overall results.
Iran also marked a milestone in Istanbul as competitor Helia Khodabandelou earned the country's first bronze medal in iGeo history. The Iranian team additionally finished first in the Poster Competition, which showcases participants' scientific presentation and visual design skills.
