Türkiye’s domestic travel spending surpasses 2024 total in first nine months of 2025

Domestic tourists’ travel spending in Türkiye reached 469.5 billion in the January–September 2025 period, surpassing the total expenditure recorded in the whole of 2024, according to data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK).

Data show that domestic residents undertook trips for various purposes during the period, including leisure, entertainment and holidays, cultural activities, visiting relatives, health, meetings and conferences and commercial activities and fairs.

The number of domestic trips increased by 2.6% year-on-year to 56.83 million in the first nine months of 2025. In the same period of 2024, domestic tourists made 55.37 million trips.

Travel expenditure shows strong growth

Domestic travel expenditure rose sharply over the period. While spending totaled 353.26 billion in January–September 2024, it increased by 32.9% year-on-year to 469.47 billion in the same period of 2025.

By comparison, total domestic travel spending for the whole of 2024 amounted to 419.3 billion, meaning that spending in the first nine months of 2025 alone exceeded the previous year’s annual total.

Leisure and holiday travel dominate spending

An analysis of expenditures by travel purpose indicates that leisure, entertainment, and holiday travel accounted for the largest share of domestic tourism spending.

Spending in this category rose by 34.5% year-on-year to 259.31 billion in the January–September 2025 period. Expenditure on visiting relatives increased by 28.9% to 167.94 billion.

Other spending categories included health-related travel, which rose by 41.4% to ₺23.04 billion, and other travel-related expenditures, which increased by 53.4% to 10.30 billion.

Spending on meetings, conferences, courses and seminars reached 3.30 billion, up 1.2%, while commercial activities and fairs accounted for 2.86 billion, reflecting a 17.3% increase.

Cultural travel spending recorded the highest growth rate among all categories. Expenditures in this segment rose by 91.5% year-on-year, reaching 2.72 billion in the January–September 2025 period.
