Heavy rain and thunderstorms swept across several districts of Istanbul on Saturday after the Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM) issued a yellow weather warning for Istanbul and three other provinces.

The storms began affecting both the European and Asian sides of the city following earlier forecasts of locally heavy rainfall.

On the European side, intermittent downpours were reported in Besiktas, Fatih, Bakirkoy, Eyupsultan, Sultangazi and Kagithane. On the Asian side, heavy showers and thunderstorms impacted Umraniye, Kadikoy, Beykoz, Uskudar and nearby districts.

Many residents who had prepared for the rain continued their journeys with umbrellas, while others, caught off guard, sought shelter under bus stops and shop awnings.

In several neighborhoods, intense rainfall caused water to accumulate on roads, slowing traffic and creating hazardous driving conditions.

The Meteorological Service warned that Istanbul, Tekirdag, Kirklareli and Kars are under a yellow alert due to the risk of locally heavy thunderstorms.

Authorities said the storms could bring flash floods, urban flooding, lightning, strong wind gusts, localized hail and disruptions to transportation.

In eastern Türkiye, heavy rainfall is also expected in Kars, where officials warned that the region's mountainous terrain could increase the risk of landslides in addition to flooding.
