Turkish counterterrorism units detained 115 terrorist organization Daesh suspects who were planning attacks targeting non-Muslims during Christmas and New Year celebrations, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office announced Thursday.
The simultaneous operations were conducted across Istanbul by the Police Department's Counter-Terrorism Branch on instructions from the Prosecutor's Office's Terror Crimes Investigation Bureau.
Arrest warrants had been issued for 137 suspects at the national and international level on terrorism charges. Of these, 115 were apprehended, with operations continuing to locate the remaining suspects.
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office said in its statement: "Within the scope of investigations conducted by the Istanbul Police Department Counter-Terrorism Branch on the instructions of our Prosecutor's Office Terror Crimes Investigation Bureau.
"Simultaneous detention, search and seizure operations were carried out at 124 different addresses across our province regarding 137 suspects who were found to have information about action calls and attack plans targeting our country, primarily non-Muslim individuals, within the scope of the approaching Christmas and New Year activities of the Daesh armed terrorist organization, and who were understood to be connected to conflict zones within the scope of terrorist organization activities, and some of whom had arrest warrants issued at the national and international level for terrorism crimes. As a result, pistols, cartridges and many organizational documents were seized.
"Of the suspects, 115 have been detained, and operations regarding suspects who could not be apprehended are still ongoing. Further information will be provided on developments."
The mass detention comes amid heightened security measures across Türkiye ahead of New Year celebrations.
