Local authorities have released four suspects under judicial supervision following an investigation into a gruesome discovery at a cemetery in southeastern Türkiye. The individuals were detained after 21 human fetuses were found inside a plastic barrel at Sanliurfa’s Yeni Aile Cemetery.

The incident came to light after cemetery visitors discovered the barrel, which was normally used for trash disposal, and alerted police to the fetuses hidden inside.

Authorities launched an investigation after labels allegedly linked to the Sanliurfa Training and Research Hospital were reportedly found on the containers.

Investigation shifts focus

Police began looking into who had brought the fetuses to the cemetery and why they had been left there rather than buried. The fetuses were initially believed to have resulted from miscarriages and abortions, according to the early assessment cited in the investigation.

Security measures were put in place around the area while the fetuses were transferred to the morgue of the forensic medicine institution for examination.

Surveillance footage leads to detentions

As the inquiry widened, police reviewed security camera footage and detained four people over alleged negligence and misconduct linked to the case.

The suspects included a funeral worker responsible for burial preparations, a hospital employee, and two municipal staff members. After completing procedures at the police station, the four were referred to court under heightened security measures.

A court later released all four under judicial supervision, a legal measure in Türkiye that allows suspects to remain free while requiring them to comply with conditions set by judicial authorities during an ongoing investigation.
