Authorities said Tuesday that 27 suspects have been detained in connection with a shooting attack on a police station in Izmir’s Balcova district that left two officers dead and two others wounded.
The Izmir Chief Prosecutor’s Office said the investigation is ongoing into Monday’s attack on the Salih Isgoren Police Station, in which Police Chief Inspector Muhsin Aydemir, a first-class officer, and Police Officer Hasan Akin were killed. Two other officers and a civilian were wounded.
The gunman, identified as 16-year-old E.B., opened fire with a shotgun before being captured wounded, authorities said. He was taken into custody along with his parents, A.B. and N.B., and two friends, A.K. and D.S. Other suspects were detained in different provinces, including K.N., a 32-year-old Iranian national in Istanbul, two others in Ankara, and one in Sanliurfa.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya condemned the attack as “heinous,” saying one officer remained “seriously injured.” He confirmed that E.B. had been arrested and that a full investigation was underway.
Izmir Governor Suleyman Elban told reporters the suspect lived on the same street as the police station and had no criminal record.
“The murder suspect is a 16-year-old who lives on this street. He has no criminal record or previous arrests for any crime,” Elban said. He added that investigators recovered numerous empty shotgun shells and unused cartridges at the scene.
According to Elban, the weapon used in the attack was a shotgun purchased by the suspect’s father a decade ago.
