A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck off the coast of Gokceada, in the Canakkale province of northwestern Türkiye, early Wednesday morning. According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the tremor occurred at 8:18 a.m. local time in the Aegean Sea.
The quake's epicenter was recorded 12.61 kilometers below the sea surface, causing mild but noticeable shaking across surrounding coastal areas.
Initial reports indicate that there were no injuries or major structural damage caused by the earthquake. Authorities continue to monitor the region for aftershocks.
The Aegean region of Türkiye is located on a highly active fault line, and seismic activity is not uncommon. Experts have warned residents in the area to remain vigilant and adhere to earthquake safety protocols.
Türkiye remains on high alert after several significant earthquakes in recent years. The Gokceada quake, though moderate in magnitude, reignites public concern over the country's earthquake preparedness.
AFAD has not issued a tsunami warning, and local officials have advised citizens to stay calm but cautious.
