Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu said the Alacabel Tunnel, a key transit point on the route between Konya and Antalya, will reduce travel time by 20 minutes and shorten the route by 7 kilometers (4.35 miles) once completed.
In a written statement, Uraloglu provided information on the ongoing tunnel construction work in the Alacabel region.
Noting that the Alacabel Tunnel is being built as a twin-tube structure measuring 7,360 meters in length, Uraloglu said excavation and lining concrete work have been completed in the tunnel, and asphalt paving is now underway.
He added that together with the project's 11.8-kilometer connecting roads, the total length reaches 19.2 kilometers, and that the tunnel and its connecting roads are being built to divided-road standards with hot-mix asphalt paving.
Uraloglu pointed out that the Alacabel Tunnel and its connecting roads pass approximately 427 meters lower than the elevation of the existing road, emphasizing that the project is particularly significant for transportation during harsh winter.
Noting that the project will eliminate the disruptions typically experienced during winter months on the Alacabel route and ensure safe, uninterrupted transportation between Konya and Antalya, Uraloglu said the tunnel's completion will shorten the route by 7 kilometers compared with the existing road.
It will also cut travel time between Konya and Antalya by 20 minutes.
He said this will raise transportation standards while helping drivers save time and fuel.
According to Uraloglu, the tunnel will generate total annual savings of ₺910 million, ₺768 million from time savings and ₺142 million from fuel savings.
He added that the project will also reduce carbon emissions by 7,151 tons annually.
