The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation on Saturday into Ibrahim Melih Gokcek, the former mayor of Ankara, over allegations that he transferred undocumented funds to companies based abroad.
The prosecutor's office said it opened the inquiry on its own initiative, after allegations appeared in various news outlets claiming that Gokcek had moved unregistered money to firms located outside Türkiye.
In a statement, the office said the investigation was launched "for the purpose of uncovering the material truth" regarding the claims.
The specific allegations were not detailed by prosecutors, who characterized their action as a response to claims circulating in the press rather than a case built on a formal complaint. The statement did not specify the amount of money allegedly involved, the identity of the companies named, or the countries in which they are based.
Gokcek is a prominent figure in Turkish politics who served as mayor of Ankara for 23 years, from 1994 until his resignation in October 2017. He won five consecutive terms in office, making him the longest-serving mayor in the capital's history.
