At least six people were killed Saturday in a fire that broke out at a perfume warehouse in the Dilovasi district of Kocaeli, a major industrial hub in northwestern Türkiye, authorities said.
The blaze erupted at a facility on Mimar Sinan Street in the Mimar Sinan neighborhood, where perfume and cosmetic products were produced. Flames rapidly spread through the warehouse and reached the roof of an adjacent building, according to local media.
Located about 70 kilometers (43 miles) east of Istanbul, Dilovasi is home to numerous factories and storage sites.
Kocaeli Governor Ilhami Aktas confirmed to Anadolu Agency that six people were killed in the fire. The governor’s office later said one person was also injured.
Turkish Labor and Social Security Minister Vedat Isikhan said in a separate statement that six people had died and seven others were injured.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, but officials said a formal investigation has been launched to determine what sparked the deadly blaze.
Following an inquiry opened by the Gebze Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, police detained three individuals, including the workplace owner and two shift supervisors, in operations carried out in Kocaeli and the neighboring province of Yalova.
The arrests followed the issuance of warrants related to suspected criminal liability in the incident. All three suspects were taken into custody and transferred to police headquarters for processing.
Mehmet Duzguner, a local resident who witnessed the fire, said he rushed to help after hearing an explosion.
“There was an explosion, and when I went outside, I saw someone burning,” Duzguner told reporters. “I put the man out with the hose in the garden. I heard voices from inside, but I couldn’t enter because of the fire. They say there were four to five people inside. I heard screams coming from inside, but I could not go in.”
Numerous fire crews were dispatched to the scene and brought the fire under control. Emergency teams remain at the site, and an investigation is ongoing.
