A Turkish defense company has developed new drone defense systems tailored for civilian areas, addressing growing risks posed by unauthorized drones at airports and other critical infrastructure.

Bogazici Savunma, known for its military-grade anti-drone technologies, has adapted its expertise to civilian needs as drone incursions increasingly disrupt flights across Europe. The company’s systems are currently being tested in a pilot region.

Recent drone sightings at Aalborg Airport in Denmark and other European airports have highlighted the risks drones pose to civilian aviation. Flights have been delayed or canceled due to unauthorized drone activity, raising concerns about safety and economic losses.

As Denmark prepares to host the European Union and European Political Community summits on Oct. 1-2, countries including France, Germany and Sweden have deployed troops, radar, and counter-drone systems to support Danish airspace security.

Türkiye's Bogazici Savunma adapts military systems

Bogazici Savunma has developed the ILTER product family, which has been used by security forces and exported abroad. The company has now shifted part of its focus to civilian applications.

"Although anti-drone systems appear to be used mainly in military areas, risks have now spread to civilian fields," said Fatih Aslan, chairman of Bogazici Savunma's board, in an interview with state-run Anadolu Agency (AA) on Tuesday.

"Normal civilian flights, hobby flights, journalism, or even wedding photography have started to pose threats. In such cases, flights are canceled, leading to serious financial losses and wasted time," Aslan said.

Civilian-focused solutions in pilot testing

Aslan said the company completed research and development and moved to serial production about four months ago.

"We are developing products that are slightly different from military ones, capable of affecting drones that threaten civilian flights without disrupting existing systems. Our products are ready and are currently being tested in a pilot region," he said.

He added that the systems have already shown success in preventing unauthorized flights.

Bogazici Savunma is also in talks with multiple countries regarding civilian and aviation security applications.

"Our discussions are ongoing with several countries, including major European nations, as well as African and Asian countries. We are conducting demo activities with them on airport security," Aslan said.

The company’s systems are also utilized by the Turkish Navy, with several ships equipped with this technology.

Expanding product family

Bogazici Savunma has developed over 10 products for various operational needs, ranging from short-range to long-range systems.

"Some of our products are effective up to 2 kilometers, others up to 150 kilometers. In the airport concept, we have varieties according to size. A slightly different version of the same products is also being developed for yachts, which have become a new threat area," Aslan said.

He noted that major European yacht manufacturers have expressed interest in integrating the systems.
