Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) spokesperson Aysegul Dogan described the terrorist PKK’s recent declaration of self-dissolution as “not just a decision to disband, but the beginning of a new phase of rebuilding.”
The terrorist organization PKK announced it had held its 12th congress and was disbanding, a move that has drawn varied responses from across Türkiye’s political spectrum.
Commenting before her party's Central Executive Board (CEB) meeting, DEM Party Co-Chair Tuncer Bakirhan stated, “The congress is a positive development for Türkiye. There is no longer any excuse not to build a democratic Türkiye.”
During a press statement given between CEB sessions, Dogan said the development marked “the opening of a new chapter in resolving a conflict that has caused deep social wounds for the past 50 years.”
She added, “One era is ending, and a hopeful new one is beginning—for all of us. The PKK has announced its farewell to arms. We must not waste this opportunity. Let us not look back with regret; let us say, ‘we made it happen.’”
Dogan also welcomed the initial reactions from government officials, calling them “positive,” but stressed that the true test lies in how the coming days unfold.
She emphasized the need for collective effort, saying, “We must unite our strength to make this historic opportunity permanent. We are facing the task of building a democratic republic where law and politics function properly. The most important venue for this is, of course, the Parliament. It holds the responsibility of shaping what could be the most meaningful reform in a century.”
Calling for broad participation, she urged all citizens to help build a new and democratic Türkiye.
