President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke by phone Saturday, covering bilateral relations and a range of regional and global issues, according to a statement from Türkiye's Presidential Communications Directorate announced.
Erdogan told Carney that the two countries are actively working to elevate their relationship across several key sectors, including trade, security, the defense industry and energy, and that Ankara intends to press ahead with steps taken toward that goal.
The conversation came days before Türkiye is set to host the NATO Leaders Summit on July 7-8 in Ankara, and Erdogan expressed hope that the gathering would serve as an opportunity to deepen cooperation among alliance members.
Türkiye, a NATO member since 1952, has in recent years positioned itself as an active broker within the alliance, including on issues related to enlargement and burden-sharing.
Erdogan also extended congratulations to Carney on Canada Day, the national holiday marked on July 1 celebrating Confederation in 1867.
