President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in Kazakhstan's capital Astana on Wednesday to attend two high-profile diplomatic engagements: the Türkiye-Kazakhstan High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council meeting and an informal summit of the Organization of Turkic States.
Erdogan's aircraft touched down at Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport, where it was escorted by fighter jets during its approach. Two helicopters flying over the airport carried the flags of both Türkiye and Kazakhstan as part of the ceremonial reception.
Erdogan, accompanied by his wife Emine Erdogan, was received at the airport's honor lounge by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Türkiye's Ambassador to Astana Mustafa Kapucu, and other officials.
Children holding Turkish and Kazakh flags greeted the two leaders as they made their way into the lounge, where a children's choir performed the traditional Kazakh song "Dombra."
The children welcomed Erdogan with the phrase "Welcome to the ancestral homeland," to which the Turkish president responded, "We are glad to be here." Erdogan then posed for photographs with the children before holding a brief standing conversation with Tokayev and departing the airport. A Turkish delegation accompanied Erdogan on the visit.
The bilateral council meeting represents one of the most structured formats in Türkiye-Kazakhstan relations, bringing together senior officials from both governments to coordinate on economic, political, and security matters.
The two countries share linguistic and cultural ties as Turkic nations, a bond that has underpinned close diplomatic engagement in recent decades.
The informal summit of the Organization of Turkic States, which groups Türkiye, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Azerbaijan, along with observer members, serves as a forum for political consultation and integration among Turkic-speaking nations.
