Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Tuesday that Türkiye and Russia would take steps for other nuclear power plants after the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant is completed and inaugurated.
Erdogan made the remarks during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Heads of State Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
“We are now in the completion phase of the Akkuyu Power Plant,” Erdogan said in a joint press statement with Putin.
“We are waiting for the Akkuyu Power Plant to be completed and for us to inaugurate it. Because with the opening of the Akkuyu Power Plant, we will take steps for other plants together,” he added.
Erdogan traveled to Bishkek for the SCO summit and delivered a speech at the Iris Ordo Congress Center.
He also held meetings with several heads of state and government on the sidelines of the summit.
Erdogan said he valued the opportunity to meet Putin during the summit, adding that Türkiye-Russia relations had reached a much more advanced level than in any previous period.
“I also find it very important to make use of such an opportunity with the esteemed president today,” Erdogan said.
“Türkiye-Russia relations are truly at a very advanced level today compared with every period,” he added.
Erdogan also highlighted Russian tourism in Türkiye, saying Russian visitors play an important role, particularly in Antalya.
“The importance of Russian tourists in Türkiye is very, very different. Today, the most important tourist network of our Antalya province is made up of friends coming from Russia,” he said.
Erdogan said Türkiye and Russia also have strong cooperation in agriculture and energy.
Putin said during the meeting that Türkiye is one of Russia’s privileged partners in foreign policy and the economy.
“I am very pleased with today’s meeting,” Putin said.
He also pointed to the Akkuyu project as a major area of cooperation between the two countries.
“Our companies are advancing the nuclear power plant project in Türkiye,” Putin said.
