Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday in Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, the Kremlin said in a statement Thursday.
“Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to meet with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Turkmenistan tomorrow,” the statement read.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed the meeting during a press briefing. “Tomorrow, President Putin will hold contacts in Ashgabat. An International Peace and Trust Forum will be held in Turkmenistan on the occasion of the International Year of Peace and Trust. The president has also planned several bilateral meetings on the margins of this forum,” Peskov said. When asked specifically whether a meeting with Erdogan was scheduled, he replied, “It is planned.”
Putin is scheduled to visit Ashgabat on Dec. 11–12 to attend the forum, which is being held in conjunction with the United Nations’ designation of 2025 as the International Year of Peace and Trust. The event also marks the International Day of Neutrality and the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality status.
According to the Kremlin press service, Putin will hold a number of bilateral meetings with foreign leaders on the sidelines of the forum.
Erdogan will also attend the forum in Ashgabat, with multiple bilateral meetings planned during his visit, including the scheduled meeting with Putin.
