President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday that Türkiye was intensifying preparations for the NATO Leaders Summit in Ankara on July 7-8, aiming to make the gathering a reference point in the alliance’s history.
Speaking at a parliamentary group meeting of his ruling Justice and Development Party, or AK Party, Erdogan said Türkiye attached great importance to the summit and noted strong interest from NATO allies and the wider international community.
“We attach great importance to the NATO Leaders Summit to be held in Ankara on July 7-8,” Erdogan said.
He termed U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement that he would attend the meeting a significant step for the unity of the alliance.
“The recent announcement that U.S. President Trump will personally attend the summit was a valuable step in terms of the alliance’s cohesion,” Erdogan said.
He added that Ankara would use the time before the meeting as effectively as possible to complete preparations.
Erdogan said interest in the Ankara summit extended beyond NATO member countries.
“There is intense interest in the Ankara Summit not only among the allies but also around the world,” he said.
Türkiye has accelerated preparations to ensure that the meeting holds lasting significance for NATO, Erdogan added.
“We have intensified our preparations so that the Ankara Summit becomes a reference point in NATO’s history,” he said.
The president said 2026 would be the year in which Türkiye’s international profile and visibility reached the highest level.
Erdogan said Türkiye would also host several other major international events after the NATO summit.
The country is scheduled to host the 77th International Astronautical Congress in October.
Türkiye will then organize the 13th Summit of the Organization of Turkic States, which Erdogan described as the country’s “family council.”
Antalya will host the 31st United Nations Climate Change Conference, or COP31, from Nov. 9 to 20.
Erdogan said the climate gathering was expected to bring together 100,000 participants from 197 countries.
“You will see that COP31 will go down in history as the largest environmental summit ever held, with 100,000 participants from 197 countries,” he said.
The president said the series of international meetings would contribute to Türkiye’s global visibility throughout 2026.
