President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the international system is facing a “major legitimacy crisis” and warned of escalating wars and global instability in a video message to the STRATCOM Summit 2026 held in Istanbul.
Erdogan addressed participants of the summit themed “Fragmentation in the International System: Crises, Narratives and the Search for Order,” expressing hope that the discussions would bring beneficial outcomes for humanity.
Erdogan said the international system established after World War II by the victors is increasingly losing its functionality.
“The international system established by the victors after World War II is experiencing a major legitimacy crisis in almost every field. The institutions, rules and values that form the basis of the system are losing their function day by day,” he said.
He added that global power competition is expanding into energy, technology and trade, while conflicts are increasingly being resolved through force instead of dialogue.
“We are going through a difficult period in which genocides, wars and crises are escalating,” Erdogan said.
Erdogan said the summit would address a wide range of topics over two days, including leadership diplomacy, digital transformation, conflict resolution, global climate governance, migration, social policies and crisis management.
He thanked participants for their contributions and congratulated Türkiye’s Communications Directorate for organizing the event, noting that its scope and impact continue to grow each year.
Erdogan emphasized the need to strengthen communication and cooperation mechanisms to counter what he described as false and distorted narratives.
“To prevent the spread of new and fabricated narratives designed to distort the truth, we must further strengthen communication and cooperation mechanisms,” he said.
He added that governments, academics, civil society and think tanks must take greater responsibility and play a more active role.
Erdogan stressed the importance of ending humanitarian crises and restoring stability, pointing to ongoing suffering in Gaza.
“It is more important than ever to end tragedies such as those in Gaza and to re-establish peace, stability and prosperity in our region and the world,” he said.
He said Türkiye will continue to pursue a principled, determined and peace-oriented policy centered on humanitarian values and justice.
“As Türkiye, we will continue to maintain our principled, determined and peace-focused stance and mobilize all our resources to help rebuild peace and security not only in our region but across the world,” Erdogan said.
