President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, expressing Türkiye's readiness to host peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul, according to a statement from the Turkish Presidency's Communications Directorate.
According to the Kremlin press service, Putin and Erdogan discussed in detail the Russian initiative to resume direct talks with Ukraine, which Russia proposes to hold in Istanbul beginning May 15.
The proposal follows Putin's news conference in Moscow, where he suggested resuming direct peace negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv in Istanbul and mentioned his intention to speak with Erdogan about hosting the talks in Türkiye.
During the call, bilateral relations between Türkiye and Russia were discussed, along with regional and global issues, according to the Turkish Presidency's Communications Directorate.
President Erdogan conveyed to President Putin that he welcomed Putin's statement about continuing the Russia-Ukraine peace talks from where they left off in Istanbul in 2022.
Erdogan expressed that Türkiye stands ready to host negotiations that would lead to a permanent solution.
The Turkish president emphasized that a window of opportunity for peace has opened, stating that establishing a comprehensive ceasefire would create the necessary environment for peace talks.
Erdogan, a longtime champion of resolving the conflict, has repeatedly offered for Türkiye to host peace talks and do whatever it can to promote a resolution.
Türkiye has the distinction of enjoying good relations with both Russia and Ukraine.
