Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Türkiye is holding talks on possible regional security cooperation as part of efforts to strengthen stability across the Middle East.
Speaking during a meeting with representatives of national and international media outlets, Fidan said Türkiye believes regional stability depends on countries in the region coming together rather than relying on external actors.
He said longstanding regional problems have stemmed from a lack of trust among neighboring countries, which in turn has allowed external powers to intervene or led to internal conflicts fueled by terrorist groups.
Fidan said Türkiye has proposed the creation of a regional cooperation platform focused on security, stressing that such an initiative would not be directed outward but would instead involve regional countries committing to each other’s security.
He said that much of the region’s problems could be resolved once neighboring countries build mutual trust.
Gulf countries and other regional states, he added, need to establish mutual trust for such a platform to succeed.
Fidan said discussions are currently underway regarding the proposal but added that no formal agreement has been signed at this stage.
