Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will offer Türkiye's mediation services for Ukraine peace negotiations during his upcoming working visit to Moscow on May 26-27, according to Turkish Foreign Ministry sources.
Fidan will visit Russia at the invitation of his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, to discuss Ukraine settlement issues and regional matters, Russian media outlet TASS reported, citing Turkish MFA sources.
During negotiations in Moscow, Fidan will reaffirm Türkiye's commitment to achieving peace in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and express satisfaction with recent progress.
"At the negotiations in Moscow, Minister Fidan will declare Türkiye's commitment to achieving just and lasting peace in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and express satisfaction with the progress achieved in this direction thanks to recent important events. He will again declare Türkiye's readiness to act as a mediator in negotiations, as in 2022, as well as on May 16 (in Istanbul)," sources noted.
The statement references Türkiye's previous mediation efforts, including the 2022 negotiations and the May 16 Istanbul talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations.
During the visit, Fidan is expected to be received by Russian President Vladimir Putin and meet with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, according to Turkish MFA sources.
"In addition, bilateral meetings of the Turkish minister with Russian Presidential Assistant Vladimir Medinsky and Defense Minister Andrey Belousov are planned," sources reported.
The comprehensive meeting schedule indicates the significance both countries place on the diplomatic consultations.
The Moscow negotiations will include detailed discussions of bilateral relations, particularly in trade, energy, and tourism sectors. Sources noted that officials plan to "assess possible steps that should be taken for their further development" in bilateral cooperation areas.
The visit will also feature exchanges of views on regional and international issues, including Syria, Gaza, and the South Caucasus, according to the sources.
Fidan and Lavrov last met in April at an international diplomatic forum in Antalya, maintaining regular diplomatic contact between the two countries.
The upcoming Moscow visit continues the established pattern of high-level diplomatic engagement between Türkiye and Russia on regional security matters.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will visit Russia on a working visit May 26-27 at the invitation of Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, TASS reported, citing Turkish MFA sources.
The two-day visit format allows for comprehensive discussions on multiple bilateral and regional issues affecting both countries' interests. The invitation from Lavrov demonstrates Russia's recognition of Türkiye's role as a potential mediator in regional conflicts.
Türkiye has previously served as a mediator in Russia-Ukraine negotiations, hosting talks in 2022 and facilitating the May 16 Istanbul meeting between delegations from both countries.
The country's neutral position and diplomatic relationships with both Russia and Ukraine position it as a potential facilitator for peace negotiations. Fidan's upcoming statements in Moscow will build on this established mediation role while addressing current developments in the conflict.
