Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Wednesday held a series of phone calls concerning the escalating situation in Syria, expressing deep concern over Israel’s military strikes on Damascus and southern Syria, Turkish diplomatic sources said.
In a call with Syrian Foreign Minister Hassan al-Shaibani, Fidan said Israel’s attacks on Damascus and Sweida were alarming and posed a threat to regional security.
He emphasized the need to immediately halt all interventions that undermine efforts to stabilize Syria and stressed the importance of all relevant parties contributing to peace and stability in the country.
Fidan also discussed the issue with U.S. Special Envoy for Syria and Ambassador to Türkiye Tom Barrack.
During the call, Fidan reiterated his concerns about the Israeli strikes and the ongoing armed clashes in Syria’s southern regions, urging both to be stopped.
Israeli warplanes launched airstrikes on Damascus on Wednesday, targeting the Defense Ministry and areas near the presidential palace.
The strikes coincided with renewed Israeli attacks in the southern province of Sweida, where Israel warned operations would continue unless Syrian forces withdrew.
The Syrian military had deployed to Sweida to restore order following deadly clashes between Druze militias and Bedouin tribal fighters that left at least 30 people dead.
The Israeli military claimed its actions were intended to protect the Druze minority in the region.
