Türkiye's Foreign Ministry condemned Israeli airstrikes on Damascus Thursday, describing the attacks as an attempt to sabotage Syria's efforts to achieve peace and stability following years of civil war.
In a statement released Wednesday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said Israel's assault on central Damascus represented escalation beyond previous military interventions in southern Syria. The ministry characterized the strikes as undermining Syria's pursuit of security and integration with the international community.
"Syria's people have a historic opportunity to live in peace and integrate with the world," the Foreign Ministry said in Statement No. 145. "All stakeholders who support utilizing this opportunity should contribute to the Syrian Administration's efforts to establish ease."
Israeli warplanes targeted Syria's Ministry of Defense complex Thursday, reportedly damaging the building housing the Syrian Armed Forces' General Staff. Syria's Ministry of Defense said two civilians were wounded and significant structural damage was inflicted on the compound.
The strike followed a series of Israeli attacks in Sweida province and was viewed in Damascus as part of a broader campaign to destabilize the country. The Syrian government condemned the attack as a violation of national sovereignty and international law.
The assault on Damascus occurred amid Israeli military operations across the region, including Gaza, Lebanon, Iran and Yemen. In Gaza, nearly 10 months of bombardment have left over 58,000 dead, according to local health officials. Israel has conducted more than 6,500 strikes in Lebanon, primarily targeting Hezbollah positions.
Syrian officials called on the United Nations and international community to condemn what they termed Israeli aggression. "This is not merely an attack on Syria — it is an assault on the very foundations of international law and the rights of nations to exist without interference," a senior Syrian Foreign Ministry official said.
Türkiye's statement reflects Ankara's position as a key regional power with significant influence in Syrian affairs. As tensions escalate, Syria has vowed to pursue the matter through diplomatic channels while resisting military pressure aimed at weakening the state.
