An explosion occurred on Wednesday within the fire prevention system at the Social Sciences University of Ankara's campus building in the Ulus quarter, caused by a gas buildup.
Five students and one staff member were taken to nearby hospitals after being affected by the extinguishing gas leak.
The incident occurred at the university’s Ulus campus, where the fire extinguishing system was triggered, causing extinguishing gas to discharge and create dense smoke.
The activation was initially mistaken for a fire, leading to the precautionary evacuation of the building.
Initial reports suggested a natural gas explosion at the university shortly after noon.
After an inspection, authorities confirmed there was no explosion, determining instead that the smoke originated from a malfunction in the natural gas boiler combined with the discharge of the extinguishing system.
Fire crews searched the building to ensure there were no additional hazards.
Officials said the affected individuals are in good condition, and cooling and ventilation operations are ongoing.
