A 24-year-old woman visiting Istanbul from Germany was found dead in her hotel room on April 23, with police later uncovering phone recordings that have become central to the investigation.
Basak Schlosser had arrived in Türkiye on April 20 for a holiday and was staying in the city’s Fatih district when hotel staff raised the alarm after being unable to reach her.
Police and medical teams entered the room and found her lifeless body.
Her body was transferred to the Council of Forensic Medicine to determine the exact cause of death.
Initial findings raised questions about the circumstances of her death, leading authorities to treat the case as suspicious.
A preliminary autopsy found no signs of physical assault or forced injury. However, investigators identified a gap of approximately 9 hours in the hotel’s security camera recordings, prompting a broader inquiry.
Separately, surveillance footage from a nearby shop reportedly showed Schlosser seeking help shortly before her death, saying she was being followed.
One account cited her as saying, “They are trying to kidnap me,” adding to concerns about the circumstances leading up to the incident.
As part of the investigation, five individuals, including hotel staff and a man who had reportedly spent time with Schlosser in her room, were detained and questioned.
All were later released without charges after giving statements.
The investigation later took a new turn after authorities accessed Schlosser’s mobile phone with the assistance of her family.
According to the findings, the device contained video recordings taken shortly before her death.
The footage reportedly showed Schlosser documenting a suicide attempt and expressing intent to take her own life.
Authorities also stated that she was found hanging in the hotel room, though the final determination of the cause of death remains pending forensic analysis.
The investigation remains ongoing as officials continue to assess all available evidence.
