Following the Türkiye-Indonesia Foreign and Defense Ministers Joint Meeting, on Friday, Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin stated that the two countries will solidify their defense cooperation with a defense agreement.
Sjamsoeddin emphasized the importance of the projects the two nations would implement, which will serve as a foundation for the defense cooperation between Türkiye and Indonesia.
He added that the agreement would elevate the bilateral collaboration in defense sectors, including advanced technology and fighter jet technology.
Speaking at the press conference, which was attended by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Minister of National Defense Yasar Guler, along with Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono, Sjamsoeddin noted the goal of enhancing human resources investment programs between the two nations.
"Our cooperation will be crowned with a defense cooperation agreement that will be built on the mutual projects carried out in both countries," he said.
"We aim to establish a working group soon, and we expect the program to begin either in Türkiye or Indonesia," he added.
He also mentioned the focus of military capability improvements, such as developing professionalism, enhancing capacities, and strengthening military capabilities. He emphasized the urgency of initiating the cooperation, saying, "We are eager to start our collaboration in advanced technologies and fighter jet technologies as soon as possible."
Sjamsoeddin further stated that this cooperation would enhance both nations' defense capabilities, enabling them to elevate their military capacities within the framework of the defense cooperation agreement with Türkiye.
Indonesia's Foreign Minister Sugiono, in the same meeting, underscored the strategic importance of Türkiye to Indonesia. "Türkiye is one of the few countries with which Indonesia has regular dialogues at this level," he noted, adding that "Türkiye is a strategic partner for Indonesia."
Sugiono highlighted the importance of the D8 summit and expressed his wish to see Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and officials in Jakarta for the summit. He also remarked that Türkiye's participation in ASEAN and further economic collaboration were key topics discussed during the meeting.
Indonesia and Türkiye also agreed on the necessity of boosting cooperation in strategic sectors like renewable energy, battery ecosystems, petrochemicals, energy, and mining.
Sugiono emphasized the growing importance of defense collaboration, acknowledging that both nations needed the partnership for strategic independence amid dynamic global developments.
"Türkiye and Indonesia regularly share their views in international forums such as the UN, OIC, D8, and ASEAN," Sugiono added.
"This cooperation will help both countries work towards a more just global economic system and continued collaboration in the Muslim world," he noted.
Sugiono also called for increased collaboration on global matters, expressing optimism about further deepening Indonesia-Türkiye relations.
The Indonesian Foreign Minister concluded, "We expect the cooperation between our two countries to become even more profound and impactful in the future."
