Istanbul is closing dozens of roads in the Sariyer district on Saturday and Sunday, July 4-5, as runners take part in the city's inaugural Night Marathon along the Bosphorus coast.
The Istanbul Police Department announced that traffic restrictions will begin at 7 p.m. local time (GMT +3) on Saturday and remain in effect until the event ends.
The closures cover several major avenues, streets and connecting roads in Sariyer, while authorities have designated alternative routes for drivers.
The road closures will affect one of Istanbul's busiest Bosphorus corridors in the northern Sariyer district, covering areas that connect the waterfront neighborhoods of Tarabya, Kirecburnu, Buyukdere and central Sariyer with inland districts such as Bahcekoy.
The affected roads serve both local residents and commuters traveling along the European side of the Bosphorus.
Authorities will close Bahcekoy, Meserburnu, Piyasa, Haydar Aliyev, Misir, Haci Ali Pasa, Raif Bey, Haci Osman Bayiri, Demokrasi Sehitleri and Cayirbasi avenues, along with the Cayirbasi-Taksim road.
Drivers are advised to use Sariyer-Cayirbasi Road, the Sariyer-Cayirbasi Tunnel, Haci Osman Bayiri Avenue, Sehit Mithat Yilmaz Avenue, Yeni Mahalle Avenue, Bahcekoy Avenue, Tarabya Bayiri Avenue and Yenikoy-Tarabya Avenue as alternative routes.
The Istanbul Night Marathon is being held for the first time and features three race formats: a 42-kilometer (26.1 miles) marathon relay for teams of four, a 21-kilometer half marathon relay for teams of two and a 10K individual race.
The event takes place on a 10.5-kilometer waterfront course stretching through Cayirbasi, Kirecburnu, Tarabya, Buyukdere and Sariyer before returning to the start area.
According to the organizers, the marathon begins late Saturday evening, with the 42K relay getting underway at 10 p.m., followed by the 21K relay at 10:30 p.m. and the 10K race at 11 p.m. Activities continue into the early hours of Sunday.
Organizers say runners from more than 30 countries have registered for the inaugural event, which is supported by the Istanbul Governorship, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, the Turkish Athletics Federation and Sariyer Municipality.
