Istanbul Governorship closes major roads in Beyoglu and Sisli, suspending Taksim metro

The Istanbul Governorship ordered the closure of dozens of roads across the Beyoglu and Sisli districts on Sunday, with restrictions taking effect from 11 a.m., while Metro Istanbul announced the suspension of Taksim Metro Station and two additional transit lines from 1 p.m. until further notice.

The Istanbul Provincial Police Directorate's Traffic Enforcement Branch published the full list of affected roads along with designated alternative routes.

No official reason for the closures was given in the Governorship's announcement.

Roads closed in Beyoglu

Among the major arteries closed in Beyoglu: Istiklal Street, Siraselviler, Inonu, Mete, Bogazkesen, Tarlabasi Boulevard, Refik Saydam, Mesrutiyet, Tepebasi, Asmali Mescit, Cihangir, Galip Dede, Abdulhak Hamit, Hamalbasi, Turnaci Basi, and Tersane Street, along with all streets feeding into it.

Omer Hayyam Street is closed from the Tarlabasi-Taksim intersection onward.

Additionally, traffic toward Taksim via Ataturk Bridge will not be permitted on a further list of streets, including Kazanci Yokusu, Kumbaraci Yokusu, Defterdar Yokusu, and Akarsu Yokusu, among others.

Drivers are directed to use the following alternatives in Beyoglu: Meclis-i Mebusan Street, Barbaros Boulevard, Cumhuriyet Street, Piyalepasa Boulevard, Irmak Street (toward Dolapdere from Taksim), Kurtulus Street, Evliya Celebi Street and Akagalar Street, among other designated routes.

Roads closed in Sisli

In Sisli, Cumhuriyet Street, Mim Kemal Oke Street, Taskisla Street and Askerocagi Street are closed to vehicle traffic.

Alternative routes in Sisli include Abide-i Hurriyet Street, Ortaklar Street, Vali Konagi Street, Hakki Yeten Street, Darulaceze Street, Halaskargazi Street, and the section of Rumeli Street between the Nisantasi and Osman Bey intersections.

Metro, funicular, and cable car suspensions

Metro Istanbul announced on social media that, starting at 1 p.m., three services would be suspended until further notice: the Taksim station on the M2 Yenikapi-Haciosman Metro Line, the F1 Taksim-Kabatas Funicular, and the TF Macka-Taskisla cable car.

Trains on the M2 line will continue operating but will not stop at Taksim station.

The Istiklal Street exit of Sishane Metro Station will also be closed to passengers; other entrances and exits at Sishane will remain accessible.
