Istanbul authorities suspended metro services at key stations and imposed traffic restrictions around Istiklal Avenue and Taksim on Sunday, June 28, following a decision by the Istanbul Governor's Office as part of security measures.

The measures included the closure of Taksim Station on the M2 Yenikapi-Haciosman Metro Line, the suspension of the F1 Taksim-Kabatas Funicular Line, restricted access at Sislihane Station, and the closure of several streets and public areas to vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

Metro, funicular services halted

According to Metro Istanbul, the M2 Yenikapi-Haciosman Metro Line will not stop at Taksim Station from 10 a.m. local time (GMT+3) until further notice.

The F1 Taksim-Kabatas Funicular Line will also remain out of service during the same period.

At Sislihane Station, all entrances and exits except the Kasimpasa exit will be closed to passengers, and normal operations will resume once a new announcement is made.

Istiklal Avenue access restricted

Authorities have also announced the closure of vehicle and pedestrian access around Istiklal Avenue, extending the restrictions to its side streets as far as Tunnel Square. Controlled entry may be allowed if security officials consider it necessary.

Additional barriers will be placed around Taksim Square, the Republic Monument and Gezi Park, while Karakoy Square and nearby streets will also be closed to traffic.

Similar restrictions will apply to Mete Street, Gumussuyu Street, Siraselviler Street, Billurcu Street, Meselik Street, Divan Junction, Kazanci Ramp, Balo Street, Yeni Carsi Street, Sislihane Square, Firuzaaga Square and surrounding side streets.

The Istanbul Governor's Office has also authorized additional road and pedestrian closures elsewhere in the district if needed in response to possible public disturbances during the day.
