Five thousand costumed folk dancers performed the horon dance simultaneously at Istanbul's Maltepe Event Area, setting a new Guinness World Record for Turkish folk dances.
The Turkish Folk Dances Federation organized the record attempt. Before the event started, Seyda Subasi, the Guinness Türkiye representative, explained the rules to the participants.
Folk dancers from all over Türkiye gathered under the slogan "Horon bizumdur," which means "The horon is ours," and formed a horon circle before the attempt.
Istanbul Governor Davut Gul started the attempt, and the participants danced for about three minutes without stopping. After the judges reviewed the performance, Subasi officially announced that the federation had set the record.
The dancers celebrated their achievement by continuing to dance.
Turkish Folk DancesFederation President Huseyin Guler said the event showed the country's dedication to preserving its cultural heritage and warned against what he called cultural appropriation.
Maltepe Mayor Esin Koymen, who is originally from Rize, the Black Sea province most closely linked to the horon, said she was pleased that the attempt took place in her district.
