The Governorship of Istanbul has announced a new regulation defining where motorcycles can and cannot be parked. According to the directive, motorcycles will no longer be allowed to park on sidewalks, pedestrian walkways, or public squares. Entry into pedestrian-only areas will also be strictly prohibited.
The directive emphasized that the growing use of motorcycles and mopeds—both for individual transportation and commercial delivery—has created a greater need for properly designated parking spaces.
Municipalities have been instructed to allocate motorcycle parking areas in a way that does not disrupt traffic flow.
The regulation is based on several existing laws, including the Municipality Law, the Metropolitan Municipality Law, the Zoning Law, and Traffic Law. These laws set out local governments’ responsibilities for providing parking facilities and specify where parking is prohibited.
For example, traffic rules ban parking in front of fire hydrants, public transport stops, and at building entrances, as well as in spaces reserved for disabled drivers.
The governor’s office noted that district governors and relevant law enforcement units, including traffic police and municipal officers, will oversee compliance.
Motorcycles parked outside designated areas will face legal action. The directive underlined that inspections will be carried out rigorously to prevent irregular practices.
