Eight people injured in an incident at a middle school in Istanbul’s Basaksehir district remained hospitalized Tuesday, with one in critical condition and two in moderate-to-serious condition, Health Minister Kemal Memisoglu said.
The incident occurred Tuesday morning at a middle school in the Kayabasi neighborhood. The Istanbul Governor’s Office initially said five students were injured in a fight at around 8:40 a.m., while separate local reports described the incident as a knife attack involving a former student.
“I extend my wishes for a speedy recovery to our students injured in the fight at one of our middle schools in Basaksehir and to their families,” Memisoglu said in a social media post.
“Treatment of our eight injured people affected by the incident, including one in critical condition and two in moderate-to-serious condition, is continuing at our hospitals, and we are closely monitoring their health conditions,” he added.
Local reports said a female high school student who had previously graduated from Kayasehir Seyh Samil Imam Hatip Middle School entered her former school wearing a uniform and attacked students with a knife.
Those reports initially said six students were injured and alleged that the former student had psychological problems.
Police detained the girl following the incident, according to the reports.
Police and medical teams were dispatched to the school, and the injured received initial treatment before being taken to nearby hospitals.
The Istanbul Governor’s Office said five students had been injured in what it described as a fight among students.
The injured were taken by ambulance to nearby hospitals for treatment, and an investigation was launched into the incident.
