Japan's ambassador to Ankara, Tamura Masami, praised Türkiye's advances in defense technology Wednesday during a visit to Teknofest Southeast in Sanliurfa, saying closer defense cooperation between Türkiye and Japan could contribute to global peace.

“I think Türkiye's advances in defense technologies are excellent. I find it very surprising that such an outstanding event is being held,” Tamura told Anadolu at Sanliurfa GAP Airport.

Teknofest Southeast brings together technology enthusiasts, young investors and thousands of visitors for exhibitions, shows and the finals of technology competitions in 14 categories from Wednesday through Oct. 4.

Japan closely follows Türkiye's defense investments

Tamura said defense technology had become increasingly important worldwide and that Japan was closely monitoring Türkiye's investments and initiatives in the sector.

He said Japan had never hosted an event on a scale similar to Teknofest.

Tamura also pointed to prospects for deeper bilateral cooperation, saying Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi recently discussed defense cooperation during a bilateral meeting and agreed to expand collaboration in the field.

Ambassador highlights science and technology education

Tamura praised Teknofest for combining technological education with entertainment and said it gave children opportunities to learn about science, technology and defense.

“I have realized that great importance is attached to science, technology and even education in Türkiye,” he said.

“Through the festival, children are also educated in the field of defense while having fun. It is important for children to gain knowledge about these fields in an enjoyable way,” he added.

'Japanese people love Türkiye'

Tamura also highlighted the longstanding friendship between Türkiye and Japan, saying the two countries had maintained peaceful relations for more than 80 years since World War II.

“Türkiye faces various challenges due to its geographical location. Cooperation between Türkiye and Japan is also important for world peace,” he said.

He added that deeper cooperation between the two countries could play an important role.

“Japanese people love Türkiye, and I particularly want to emphasize that here,” Tamura said.

He also congratulated those who contributed to organizing the festival.
