Türkiye’s Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc confirmed that a planned meeting with the pro-Kurdish DEM Party’s Imrali delegation was postponed due to his attendance at funeral ceremonies for soldiers who lost their lives following a methane gas exposure in northern Iraq. The meeting is now expected to take place next week.
Speaking ahead of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party’s) parliamentary group meeting on Wednesday, Minister Tunc told reporters: “We postponed the meeting because we were attending the funerals of our fallen soldiers. We plan to meet with the Imrali delegation next week. The exact date and time are not yet determined.”
The Imrali delegation, composed of DEM Party lawmakers Pervin Buldan (Van) and Mithat Sancar (Urfa), had been scheduled to meet Tunc on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. The party’s press office previously stated: “The meeting was postponed due to scheduling reasons. A new date will be announced once finalized.”
Tunc emphasized the importance of national unity and security amid ongoing developments regarding the PKK, which is designated as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the U.S. and the EU.
“A Türkiye free of terrorism is our most critical goal. We are at a historic juncture. The PKK terrorist organization has declared an intention to dissolve. This is a sensitive process, and our people’s expectations must guide our approach,” he said.
The Imrali delegation is named after the high-security island prison where PKK ringleader Abdullah Ocalan has been held since his capture in 1999.
