One of Türkiye’s largest municipal strikes in recent years has come to an end after Izmir Metropolitan Municipality and the Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Türkiye (DISK) reached a collective bargaining agreement.
The union accepted the municipality’s offer of a 30% base wage increase along with a 19% inflation adjustment. With the majority of the nearly 23,000 striking workers voting in favor of the deal, the strike ended on its seventh day.
The strike began on May 28 after negotiations between the municipality and the DISK-affiliated Genel-Is union failed to reach an agreement. For seven days, basic municipal services across Izmir were severely disrupted.
Garbage accumulated in the streets, sanitation operations ceased, and public transportation experienced significant delays—particularly during rush hours. Residents throughout the city reported mounting frustration as services ground to a halt.
