The coastal town of Marmaris in southwestern Türkiye has hosted ambassadors from five Latin American nations as part of a cultural diplomacy initiative designed to foster stronger ties and elevate the district’s international visibility.

Held under the title "Latin American CountriesMarmaris Gathering," the three-day event brought together the ambassadors of Mexico, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Panama, and Venezuela, all of whom are currently based in Ankara.

The gathering included visits to local landmarks and offered a platform for potential cultural and economic collaboration between Türkiye and Latin American nations.

New chapter in cross-continental friendship

The event officially began with a welcoming program held at Marmaris Castle, a historic structure overlooking the Mediterranean coast. During his address, Marmaris Mayor Acar Unlu underlined the broader significance of the meeting, describing it as “more than just a diplomatic visit” and instead “the beginning of a warm friendship between Marmaris and Latin American countries.”

Unlu expressed his administration’s desire to create a lasting cultural bridge between Türkiye and Latin America, adding that they plan to host a Latin Festival in the future. “We envision a real Latin Carnival in our streets and along our coastline,” he said, calling for the continued support and ideas of the visiting ambassadors.

He emphasized the shared values between Latin America and Türkiye, citing strong traditions, warm communities, and deep respect for friendship as common ground. “History has shown that we can understand each other easily and sincerely,” Unlu added.

“Tonight, this beautiful castle is not only a historical monument but also a symbol of new connections, collaborations, and shared inspiration between continents.”

Ambassadors lend support to growing ties

Ambassadors Jose Luis Martinez y Hernandez (Mexico), Gustavo Campos Fallas (Costa Rica), Eduardo Enrique Hernandez Recinos (Guatemala), Karina Arias Fonseca (Panama), and Freddy Eduardo Molina Gutierrez (Venezuela) each delivered brief remarks during the event, voicing their appreciation for the hospitality and their hopes for deepening bilateral ties.

Throughout the event, the diplomatic delegation will tour Marmaris’ historical landmarks and natural attractions while receiving detailed briefings on the town’s cultural and tourism assets.

Meetings will also take place to explore avenues for economic and cultural cooperation between Marmaris and its respective countries.
