A fire broke out Sunday in a plastic storage facility adjacent to the private Medicana Hospital in the Konak district of Izmir, Türkiye, prompting the evacuation of patients and a large-scale emergency response..
According to initial reports, the fire began for unknown reasons in a warehouse containing plastic products in the Yenisehir neighborhood.
Police, medical personnel, and numerous fire crews were dispatched to the area following emergency calls.
Patients receiving treatment at the private hospital next to the warehouse are being evacuated by emergency teams as a precaution.
Thick black smoke rising from the scene was visible from various parts of the city.
Firefighting teams are working to prevent the blaze from spreading to the hospital, and efforts to contain the fire remain underway.
Meanwhile, as a safety precaution, authorities cut electricity in the surrounding area, including the IZBAN commuter rail line, temporarily halting train operations. Officials have not yet announced when power or train service will be restored.
Following the emergency call, police, medical teams, the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), numerous fire crews, and water trucks from the Izmir Forestry Regional Directorate responded to the scene. Multiple water tankers from municipalities across the city also joined the effort.
Firefighting teams brought the blaze under control and continued working at the warehouse site.
In a statement, Medicana International Izmir Hospital said the fire did not originate from their facility and denied reports that flames spread to the hospital building. The statement said patients were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Izmir Governor Suleyman Elban released a written statement saying the fire occurred in a construction warehouse near the hospital and spread to the surrounding area. He noted the hospital was partially affected by smoke.
Elban said all teams responded quickly and no patient at the hospital was adversely affected. He added all patients were safely evacuated to other healthcare facilities according to their medical needs.
“Firefighters, AFAD, UMKE, and security forces are working in full coordination,” Elban said. “Our governor’s office is monitoring the situation moment by moment. The fact that there has been no loss of life is our greatest consolation.”
