Türkiye said achieving peace, stability and cooperation in the Middle East is not only a regional necessity but a global responsibility, warning that conflicts across the region can rapidly endanger lives, disrupt international markets and threaten global security.
Asli Guven, Türkiye’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, made the remarks during an open debate of the U.N. Security Council on promoting political solutions in the Middle East through mediation and dialogue for lasting peace.
Guven said the region was experiencing one of the most unstable periods in its recent history and stressed that Türkiye was prepared to support mediation efforts aimed at ending conflicts.
“Today, our region is experiencing one of the most unstable periods in recent history,” Guven said. “Millions of people in Gaza continue to live under conditions of insecurity and uncertainty.”
Guven said Israel continued to disregard its obligations despite the ceasefire in Gaza.
She also accused Israel of pursuing policies that further consolidated its occupation of the West Bank and deliberately undermined the two-state solution.
Guven referred to what she described as Israel’s destabilizing actions in Syria and Lebanon.
She said the latest conflicts and their repercussions across the Gulf demonstrated how quickly regional tensions could escalate.
“The recent conflicts, together with their repercussions across the Gulf, have once again shown how rapidly regional tensions can intensify, endangering lives, disrupting global markets and threatening regional and international security,” Guven said.
She said the Middle East was surrounded by multiple crises and conflicts that required greater international engagement.
“Advancing peace, stability and cooperation in the Middle East is not only a regional necessity but also a global responsibility,” she said.
Guven highlighted Ankara’s diplomatic efforts and said Türkiye had demonstrated its commitment to constructive engagement and practical diplomacy in conflicts ranging from Gaza and Ukraine to the Horn of Africa.
In addition to mediation efforts concerning Gaza, Türkiye has actively supported initiatives intended to facilitate dialogue with Iran, she said.
Guven said Türkiye remained ready to support all mediation efforts aimed at ending conflicts in the region.
She stressed that political processes could not survive if rules designed to protect human life, dignity and international peace and security were ignored.
“No political process can survive if the rules adopted to protect human life, dignity and international peace and security are disregarded,” Guven said.
She added that the U.N. Security Council carried a special responsibility in ensuring those principles were upheld.
