Panic broke out in Istanbul's Maltepe district following an armed incident that left two dead and one injured.
A tenant killed his landlord and the landlord’s wife and injured a lawyer after an argument turned into an armed attack in Istanbul’s Maltepe district on Thursday, authorities said.
The incident occurred around 1:10 p.m. on Taskocagi Street in the Gulsuyu neighborhood on the city’s Asian side.
According to initial reports, an argument broke out between landlord Osman A. and his tenant, Mehmet T., for an unknown reason. The dispute quickly escalated into a fight.
Mehmet T. then opened fire on Osman A., his wife, Nursen A., and lawyer Emir Ali S., who was at the scene.
Osman A. and Nursen A. died at the scene, while Emir Ali S. was injured.
Medical teams provided first aid to the injured lawyer before taking him to a hospital for treatment.
After the attack, Mehmet T. remained in the area with his gun and continued to open fire on police and 112 emergency medical teams were dispatched to the scene.
Police, special operations units and medical teams were sent to the area, while extensive security measures were taken.
Activity in the area was monitored by drone.
Special operations police intervened and captured the suspect alive.
Mehmet T. was detained. He had three previous records for threats and insult offenses, according to local reports.
Eyewitness Akin Gumusoglu said he helped take the injured lawyer to a hospital.
“I was chatting with my mother in the car, and the car was running. Someone came shouting from up there, from the street. He said, ‘Brother, save me.’ He jumped into the car,” Gumusoglu said.
“I took him to the nearest hospital, Kartal Lutfi Kirdar. I kept talking to the man so he would not faint,” he added.
Gumusoglu said the injured man told him there had been three people at the scene.
“He told me, ‘There were three of us in total, including me. I survived, I don’t know about the others,’” Gumusoglu said.
“I only kept him talking so he would not fall asleep, so he would not lose energy and faint. Then his brothers came to the hospital. They took his statement there and so on,” he added.
An investigation was launched into the incident.
