A flight carrying detained participants in the Global Sumud flotilla landed in Istanbul after being intercepted by Israeli military, with nationals from 15 countries on board, the Turkish Foreign Ministry announced.
The flight, which transited through Crete, carried passengers spanning four continents.
The largest contingent aboard the flight was Malaysian, with 10 nationals, followed by 6 Britons, 5 Argentinians, 4 Americans, 3 Spaniards, 2 Australians, 2 Brazilians, 2 Italians and 2 New Zealanders. Single nationals from Bahrain, the Netherlands, Mexico, Pakistan and Chile were also on board. Eighteen Turkish nationals were included in the group, with two additional Turkish citizens, held back by medical checks, expected to arrive in Türkiye the following day.
The detainees were released to Crete before boarding the onward flight to Istanbul, suggesting coordination between Israeli, Greek and Turkish authorities in managing the departure of the internationally diverse group of flotilla participants.
