Turkish main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Ozgur Ozel's team is allegedly promoting the idea that "CHP's presidential candidate should be the party's chairman," amid the detention of former Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, Turkish media outlet Hurriyet columnist Abdulkadir Selvi claimed.
Selvi reported that Ozel’s name is beginning to surface as a potential presidential candidate in place of Ekrem Imamoglu.
Selvi noted that the CHP’s Presidential Candidate Office changed its stage backdrop following criticism.
Previously, a panel displayed CHP’s six arrows and Ataturk’s photo, later replaced with Ekrem Imamoglu’s photo and name.
After further complaints, the backdrop was changed again: the Presidential Candidate Office logo and Ataturk’s photo returned, with CHP Chairman Ozgur Ozel’s photo added below the logo, Selvi reported.
Selvi claimed that Ozel's team is using Imamoglu's legal troubles to promote Ozel as the candidate.
"Ozgur Ozel's team, citing Imamoglu's diploma being cancelled, the corruption and bribery case against him regarding Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, and the 'fool case' in which he was sentenced to prison for insulting YSK members, are propagating: 'It is not possible for Ekrem Imamoglu to be a presidential candidate, CHP's presidential candidate is CHP's chairman,'" Selvi wrote.
Selvi noted that Ozel has stated he will not run for president.
"Ozgur Ozel says he will not be a presidential candidate, but the removal of Imamoglu's photo and name from the Presidential Candidate Office and the placement of his photo has strengthened the thesis that CHP's candidate will be Ozgur Ozel," Selvi wrote.
"I waited to write this article, thinking perhaps CHP would make a correction on its official website. However, there was no change in the text and video on CHP's official website," he added.
