At least eight people were killed and 26 others injured after a passenger bus overturned into a ravine in the southern Turkish coastal city of Antalya on Sunday, authorities said.

The bus, operated by the Buzlu company and traveling on the Tekirdag–Antalya route, hit roadside barriers before plunging into a ravine in the Dosemealti district, officials said. The vehicle bore license plate number 26 ABG 022.

The passenger bus reportedly overturned after the driver lost control of the steering wheel due to heavy fog and slippery road conditions while approaching a multi-level intersection on the Northern Ring Road in the Komurculer neighborhood of the Dosemealti district.

The bus rolled over, skidded along the road, broke through barriers and fell into a 15-meter-deep ditch, according to initial reports.

One passenger who survived the crash said the weather was poor and that the driver failed to negotiate a curve before the bus overturned.

The injured were taken to nearby hospitals by medical teams for treatment.

Probe launched into crash

Meanwhile, Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc said Sunday that a judicial investigation had been launched into the accident.

He said one deputy chief prosecutor and two public prosecutors had been assigned to examine the case.

Authorities did not immediately provide further details on the cause of the accident.
