President Erdogan answers ambiguously to question on reelection bid

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan outlined significant developments in counterterrorism efforts and constitutional reform during a press conference Wednesday following his return from the Organization of Turkic States summit in Budapest.

In response to a question about his possible reelection bid, he said, "He does not have any reason to seek reelection for another term." Turkish media reported that Erdogan's answer created ambiguity.

Erdogan on PKK laying down arms after decades of conflict

The president confirmed that the PKK terrorist organization has made decisions to lay down arms and dissolve, marking a potential end to a conflict that has spanned multiple decades. "This problem emerged when babies born at that time are now over 40 years old. Several generations were born into this problem and it remained unresolved for long years," Erdogan said.

Erdogan expressed hope that families would soon be reunited, specifically mentioning the Diyarbakir mothers who have long protested for their children's return. "Soon mothers will embrace their children. I believe we will receive this good news," he stated.

New civilian constitution proposed to replace military-era charter

Erdogan announced that his ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) is preparing proposals for a new civilian constitution to replace Türkiye's current charter, which was drafted following the 1980 military coup. He extended an invitation to the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) to participate in the process.

"Can we get anywhere with a constitution written under coup conditions, no matter how many changes are made, that operates within the lines of coup mentality?" Erdogan questioned. The president emphasized that the first four articles of the constitution, which establish Türkiye's fundamental characteristics as a republic, would not be subject to change.

Syria sanctions lifted following diplomatic coordination with Trump

Erdogan detailed recent diplomatic progress regarding Syria sanctions, crediting coordination with U.S. President Donald Trump for breakthrough developments. Following their virtual participation in a Riyadh summit where Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa was present, both the United States and European Union announced the lifting of sanctions on Syria.

"We had focused conversations about lifting sanctions on Syria in our phone call with Mr. Trump," Erdogan explained. The president highlighted ongoing efforts to address the YPG issue in northern Syria, noting that committees involving American, Syrian, and Iraqi officials are working to resolve the status of ISIS detainees and civilians in camps.

Economic support measures announced amid energy discoveries

The president addressed recent economic developments, including natural gas discoveries in the Black Sea and government subsidies covering 65% of natural gas bills for consumers. He announced plans for additional support to the real sector through the Credit Guarantee Fund, stating that preparations are underway for new measures to assist businesses with credit access.

Erdogan also highlighted Türkiye's expanding energy exploration capabilities, noting that the country now operates six to seven seismic research and drilling vessels, including the Oruc Reis, currently conducting operations off Somalia.

When asked about international coverage, describing him as one of the world's most powerful leaders and Trump's ally, Erdogan emphasized Türkiye's growing international influence. The summit in Budapest marked the first time a Turkic States Organization gathering was held in an observer member country within European Union borders.
