President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on Monday for significant United Nations reforms, stating the international body needs serious changes to fulfill its assigned duties effectively.
"It is clear that the United Nations needs serious reform to continue fulfilling the duties assigned to it. I believe it is all our responsibility to make the United Nations a platform that represents global justice in the face of the oppression that the Palestinian people, especially in Gaza, have been subjected to for years," Erdogan said in a video message to the U.N.'s 80th anniversary commemoration event.
Erdogan also emphasized the U.N.'s role in addressing global injustices, particularly regarding Palestine and Gaza.
"I believe it is all our responsibility to make the United Nations a platform that represents global justice in the face of the oppression that the Palestinian people, especially in Gaza, have been subjected to for years," the president stated.
"In the face of the atrocities to which the Palestinian people, especially in Gaza, have been subjected for many years, I believe it is our shared responsibility to make the United Nations a platform that represents global justice," he added.
President Erdogan expressed his country's strong commitment to supporting comprehensive reform efforts under the leadership of the U.N. secretary-general.
"Türkiye is determined to support all reform efforts, including the 'United Nations 80 Initiative' launched under the leadership of the Secretary-General, and to take an active role in activities aimed at making the United Nations an effective, efficient and financially strong structure," Erdogan said.
Turkish president also emphasized the need to recapture the determination shown by the U.N. founders 80 years ago.
"For this, we must take steps to strengthen the United Nations with the determination shown by the founders who laid the foundations of this organization 80 years ago, in a way that can re-establish international peace, prosperity, mutual trust and solidarity, and carry it into the future," he stated.
Erdogan reiterated Türkiye's position on U.N. Security Council reform, referencing the country's motto, "The world is bigger than five."
He issued a direct call to member nations: "At this point, I invite member countries to urgently take steps that will make the United Nations the hope of humanity again."
President Erdogan acknowledged that Türkiye is among the founding members of the U.N. and congratulated the organization on its 80th anniversary. He noted that the U.N. has achieved significant successes in its core objectives since its establishment in 1945, including ensuring global peace and security and developing international cooperation.
Erdogan concluded his message by expressing hopes that "the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations will lead to good things for all humanity," offering his "most heartfelt feelings and respectful greetings."
