Turkish police detained a 36-year-old Moroccan woman in Istanbul who was wanted internationally on a red notice over drug trafficking allegations and sought for extradition by Moroccan authorities.
The suspect, identified by the initials Z.E., was taken into custody during an operation at a residence in Istanbul’s Avcilar district after police received intelligence that she had entered Türkiye and was hiding in the city.
Z.E. had reportedly been wanted in Morocco for an extended period in connection with drug trafficking.
The Istanbul Police Department’s Narcotics Crimes Branch and Intelligence Branch launched a joint investigation after receiving information about Z.E.’s presence in Türkiye.
As part of surveillance and tracking efforts targeting internationally wanted suspects, police determined that she was staying at a house in Avcilar.
Officers then carried out an operation at the identified address and detained her.
Moroccan authorities had requested her return to the country in connection with the drug trafficking case.
Police investigations found that Z.E. allegedly used her sister and close friends to transport narcotics abroad.
Authorities said the drugs were placed in capsule form and swallowed before being carried across borders.
Her sister and several close associates had previously been detained during operations conducted in different countries, according to the investigation.
Following completion of legal procedures, Z.E. was transferred to a removal center for proceedings related to her extradition to Morocco.
