A powerful earthquake shook the Marmara region of Türkiye and was felt across Istanbul, the local residents reported.

According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the quake occurred at 3:35 p.m. local time (GMT+3) in the Sindirgi district of Balikesir province with a magnitude of 4.9 and originated at a depth of 11.02 kilometers.

Despite the quake not causing any danger so far, it was strongly felt across the region, particularly in Istanbul and nearby provinces.

No damage reported in Balikesir, Istanbul, or Izmir

Following the quake, AFAD said monitoring efforts are ongoing to assess possible aftershocks and ensure public safety.

Balikesir Governor Ismail Ustaoglu extended his well wishes to affected residents in a statement on X, noting that AFAD and other relevant institutions had immediately begun field inspections. "Our teams are on-site and continue their assessments. As of now, there are no reports of any adverse incidents," he said.

Despite no immediate reports of damage or casualties, the tremor was strongly felt across the region, prompting brief concern among residents. AFAD confirmed that monitoring efforts remain underway to assess potential aftershocks and ensure public safety.
