Police authorities in Istanbul have imposed a one-day ban on all public gatherings and demonstrations across four districts, citing concerns over potential illegal assemblies planned for Sunday.

The Provincial Police Directorate announced Saturday that the restrictions will affect the districts of Beyoglu, Bayrampasa, Kagithane and Sisli from 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on October 26.

The ban prohibits a wide range of activities, including open-air meetings, protest marches, setting up tents or stands, sit-in demonstrations, signature campaigns, commemorative ceremonies, distribution of leaflets, and hanging banners or posters.

Intelligence operations detect planned gatherings

According to the police statement, the decision follows intelligence gathered through ongoing virtual patrol operations. Authorities said they identified preparations by various groups for illegal gatherings, marches and protests in certain areas.

Officials expressed concern that such actions could disrupt public peace and welfare, and potentially lead to provocative incidents.

Ban issued under provincial administration laws

The restrictions were imposed under Article 11, sections (a), (b) and (c) of Law No. 5442 on Provincial Administration, as well as Articles 17 and 19 of Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstration Marches, which grant authorities powers to maintain public order.

The four affected districts are among Istanbul's most central and populous areas. Beyoglu includes the famous Istiklal Avenue, a major commercial and cultural hub that has historically been a gathering point for demonstrations.
