Turkish Coast Guard units rescued 36 irregular migrants and detained 84 others during separate operations off the Aegean coast near Izmir province, authorities announced.
The operations took place in the districts of Cesme and Seferihisar, according to a statement posted on the Coast Guard Command's website.
In waters off Cesme, Coast Guard teams responded after receiving a distress call from a rubber boat carrying irregular migrants that had suffered engine failure and was drifting at sea. The rescue operation recovered 36 people from the disabled vessel, including seven children.
In a separate incident in the same area, Coast Guard mobile radar detected another rubber boat carrying migrants. Teams intercepted the moving vessel and detained 40 irregular migrants, including two children.
A third operation unfolded on land in Seferihisar district, where authorities received reports of irregular migrants in the area. Coast Guard anti-smuggling and organized crime units, working alongside Izmir Gendarmerie Command teams, detained 44 people, including 11 children.
Two suspects were arrested on charges related to migrant smuggling in connection with the Seferihisar operation.
Following processing procedures, the irregular migrants were transferred to the Provincial Migration Management Directorate. The arrested suspects were taken to gendarmerie facilities.
