Customs enforcement teams from Türkiye's Trade Ministry have carried out an operation, which they call 'historic,' at the Gurbulak Customs Gate in Agrı, seizing 1,870 kilograms of drugs in a single bust.
According to a statement from the ministry, efforts to strengthen both human and technical capacity in the fight against smuggling continue.
In the Gurbulak operation near the Iran border, customs enforcement units discovered 1,870 kilograms (3,796 pounds) of methamphetamine soaked into coal. The street value of the drugs was determined to be 5.609 billion Turkish lira ($143 million).
An investigation into the incident is being carried out by the Dogubayazit Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office. Meanwhile, anti-smuggling operations have intensified significantly in June.
With the latest bust in Gurbulak, a total of 17,144 kilograms (3,796 pounds) of drugs—worth approximately ₺19.91 billion ($485 million)—have been seized this year.
These figures represent a 234% increase compared to the previous period, marking the highest level ever recorded.
